During my student teaching in a categorical moderately cognitively impaired classroom I created a unit based on the Extended Grade Level Content Standards in Michigan for the functional skill of understanding and using maps. At the end of the unit I had to create an assessment piece that would be challenging by not overwhelming to the students. I created this with the students reading level in mind. I also tried to keep the type of questions on the same page, so the students would not get confused by the instructions.
